
A parent applies a few drops of lavender on their child’s pillow to facilitate sleep and comes across an alarmist article mentioning endocrine disruptors. The logical reaction: stop everything. The reality is more nuanced, and understanding what lies behind this controversy requires going back to the studies themselves, their limitations, and the concrete situations where caution is truly warranted.
Gynecomastia in prepubescent boys: what the studies have actually tested
The controversy stems from clinical observations published as early as 2007: prepubescent boys exhibited abnormal breast development (gynecomastia) after regular exposure to products containing lavender or tea tree. Subsequent research expanded the findings to cases of early breast development in girls, with demonstrated estrogenic and anti-androgenic activity in vitro on certain constituents of these oils.

The problem lies in the nature of the implicated products. An organic label certifies a mode of cultivation (absence of synthetic pesticides, adherence to agricultural specifications). It does not certify the absence of hormonal effects from a natural molecule. Linalool remains linalool, whether it comes from organic lavender from Haute-Provence or conventional cultivation.

Lavender and recognized properties: what remains valid despite the controversy

On the skin, true lavender essential oil has healing and anti-inflammatory properties used in hospital settings for superficial burns. These occasional and targeted uses do not pose the same problem as low-dose daily exposure over the long term.
The issue, for aromatic plants as for any active principle, remains the dose and frequency. Moderate and occasional use does not present the same risk profile as chronic exposure, especially in prepubescent children whose hormonal system is maturing. The controversy surrounding lavender mainly reminds us that no product, even natural, deserves systematic use without consideration of quantities and duration.
